Part 1: Engineers Say New Naples Davelopment will Heal Not Harm the Land
A development battle is being fought in Naples, Florida between The Conservancy of Southwest Florida and the engineers of the Mirasol golf course development. The Conservancy claims that the new Naples development “will drain wetlands and destroy wildlife,” while the golf course’s “engineers and water management officials say it will restore natural water flow and help prevent flooding.”
The planned Naples development would stretch across 1,714 acres and would require building a three mile long, four foot deep and 200 foot wide ditch or flow-way right through the middle of natural wetlands. The purpose of the flow-way would be to “move water into nearby waterways.”
Agnoli Barber and Brundage, the company engineering the Naples development, claims that it can take an area that has been adversely affected by man and “fix it.” The company claims that their adjustments will bring water to the Cocohatchee and restore “historic flow-ways.” But The Conservancy is sceptical and says “the water district is looking at it in a very narrow way.”
