Naples Homes Along Coast Leave the City Exposed to Hurricanes
Scientists and environmentalists are trying to warn local and federal governments that the Naples, Florida´s coastline is dangerously overdeveloped. They also warn that when the next massive hurricane comes along, the impact could be "devastating -- albeit without New Orleans-style flooding."
The rapid development of new Naples homes on the coast is due to the increased number of Americans flocking to coastal counties each year. Condos and waterfront Naples homes are sprawling further and further along the coast, as residents, builders and the government continue to ignore the scientifically backed warnings.
More than 13 million people live in Florida´s coastal counties and as a result "all four of last year´s Florida hurricanes made the list of America´s 10 most damaging storms ever."
The development of waterfront Naples homes "often degrades the barrier beaches and coastal wetlands that can serve as natural buffers against hurricanes." All of the new development has left Florida exposed.
